Madonna and Child

The 'Madonna and Child' piece came from an idea of wanting to use iconic imagery rooted in religion and historical reference.  I had visited a museum in Washington DC that had rooms full of Madonna and Child motif paintings, and I wanted to do the same thing, but with people that looked like me. I wanted to bring contemporary culture to the idea, so I added an afro. There's also this strong feeling of protection of innocence in the piece. 

This piece is also part of my fairly new series that I call the 'Collage Series', where I'm experimenting with different textile patterns from different cultures, which adds more to the complexity of the piece while giving the viewer more to engage with.
