Do you have a recipe you’d like to share with LNF Weekly?

I love to cook, and I’m always on the lookout for interesting recipes. I’m also always on the lookout for people who want to contribute to LNF Weekly.

Recently I got doubly lucky.

Izabella’s recipe comes with a family history — she remembers her abuela making these empanadas when she was a small child, and the recipe has been handed down to her.

I published my recipe for saltimbocca recently. That’s not a family recipe, but it did come with a story — I developed the recipe while trying to duplicate a dish from a favorite New York City Italian restaurant.

How about you? Do you have a recipe that you’d like to share? We’re interested in everything from German kuchen and Italian gnocchi to Indian biryani , your grandfather’s Texas chili, and huachinango a la Veracruzana — and everything in between.

Patricia Ortiz contacted us through the LNF Weekly website with a suggestion: How about collecting neighborhood recipes, she asked? There’s such a variety of people and heritages in this neighborhood, it would be fascinating to know what they’re cooking. And it would be fun to try their recipes.

We thought that was a good idea, so we met with Patricia and asked her: Would you be willing to be our ‘recipe editor’? We’d ask you to accept recipe submissions from people (in fact, we’d ask you to actively solicit those submissions), get the backstory for the recipe, and put it into publishable shape.

Patricia was willing to give it a shot, and she immediately got to work. The first of her neighborhood recipes appears in this issue of LNF Weekly. It’s a family recipe for empanadas from Lavaca resident Izabella Monzon.

I’ve looked at the recipe (and at the photo) and this is definitely something I’m going to try. Thanks to both Izabella and Patricia for putting this together.

We’re looking for more recipes from our neighbors — especially recipes that have a story to go with them.

Jane Gennarelli is co-editor of LNF Weekly. She also edits the Lavaca & Friends weekly arts and entertainment newsletter.
